Gopeng Peanut Search

Pick & Mix your Ride!

Gopeng Peanut Search (GPS) is designed to give participants the freedom to choose their ride.

More than 80km of riding trails on offer – ranging from challenging hill climbs to scenic undulating rides across the ex tin-mining pools of Kinta Valley filled with fisheries, farms & plantations. Mostly off-road, the road portion accounts for about 15% of entire course.

We don’t expect riders to reach all checkpoints. The challenge is to collect as much points possible from visiting the checkpoints within 5 hours.

Don’t worry – we will set direction markers and paper trails at major intersections. Plus road & checkpoint marshals will be on present to cheer you on and ensure your safety. There will be at min 3 water stops, and plenty of Red Bull drink to re-energise riders.

About GPS

GPS promises to be a fun & exciting event for mountain bikers & outdoor enthusiasts. It is not a race in the traditional sense, rather a navigational challenge done on mountain bikes. However top finishers will get bragging rights and special token of achievement.

GPS is designed to:

  • provide safe, fun & exciting event for the growing mountain bike community

  • introduce participants to the local & hidden gems around Gopeng

    • natural highlights e.g. Gua Tempurung

    • historic sites / buildings

    • local producers e.g. farmers, fisheries, eateries etc

    • Orang Asli settlements

Event Format

Each participant will be issued a race passport and a map for orienteering. The challenge is to visit as many checkpoints possible within the 5 hour period. Each checkpoint will have a specific orienteering puncher for participant to mark on their passport. Participant need to affix stamp in the correct numbered box on their passport.

There will be about 20-30 checkpoints around the race course. Points for each checkpoint will vary depending on the difficulty level involved in reaching it (10-20-30). Penalties will also be issued for lateness.

Winner is determined based on the points collected. In the event of a tie, the winner will be determined based on the following:

  • the competitor(s) that has visited the most high scoring checkpoints (and returned within the time limit)

  • the competitor(s) that has visited the most checkpoints (and returned within the time limit)

Participants who returned within the time limit and achieved the minimum score will be eligible for the lucky draw. This is to ensure that all participants' safety is accounted for and that sponsored items are fairly allocated out.

Trail Updates

Start & finish takes place at Earth Camp, Kg Cholek. Estimated distance to cover entire event course to every checkpoints easily covers more than 80km.

Checkpoints are spread out around the area south of Gopeng town. Trails will bring riders around Gua Tempurung, hilly terrains east of Gua Tempurung heading towards Kinta Forest Reserve and scenic, sandy trails around ex-mining pools of Kinta Valley.

What to Expect?

Most of the riding trails are wide enough for 4WDs, hence two-way riding flow. There will also be interesting single track trails around the flatter sections.

Trails around hilly slopes are old logging road – mostly deeply rutted and filled with pebbles & loose rocks.

There will be at least 3 major hill climbs, which are between 220m to 290m in height. Two of these trails bring riders to small, but scenic waterfalls.

Basically one can expect a variety of terrains along the way, ranging from muddy trails with pot holes to loose sandy terrains. There will be some stream and river crossing along the way. We will also be taking riders past rubber & oil-palm estates, old tin-mining ponds, lots of farms (duck, fish, vegetables) & fruit orchards, orang asli settlements and quarry sites.

More pictures of the trail available here.

The BikeTrial game will be setup as a mini competitions to anyone. The main objective is to go over an obstacles (simple) by using any bicycles with a BikeTrial technique.

What is BikeTrial?

Bike trials is an individual sport that incorporates the use of a special bicycle which the rider must maneuver and balance on in order to complete specially designed artificial or natural "sections." The objective is to pass through the sections with as little physical contact with the ground as possible, hence obtaining minimum penalty points.

Bike Trials comes from Motorcycle Trials. Motorcycle trials riders wanted to give their kids something to practice on before moving up to motorcycles, and some of the kids grew up to love bike trials more.

Depending on your class, you have either 2 or 3 minutes to complete one section. There are usually about 5 different sections that are done in order 2 or 3 times. 1 penalty point is given each time riders touch the course with one part of their body. 5 penalty points are given when riders touch the course with more than one part of their body. When a rider reaches 5 penalty points in one section, they are finished with that section until the next loop.
