GPS Update: A Big Thank You!
Posted on 19 November 2009

Dear Racers, Marshals, Sponsors, friends and supporters,

First of all, a big thank you all the teams and supporters who made The Gopeng Peanut Search (GPS) a highly successful event that attracted 149 participants from all over Malaysia.

As the first ever mountain bike orienteering event ever to be held in Malaysia, we really appreciate the participants embracing this new race format. "I got 410 points in this race, but you race organizers score 100 per cent!" said Wong Swee Song, runner up in the Men's Veteran Category (41 and above).

The participants thoroughly enjoyed the race format in which they competed to try to get as many "peanuts" or checkpoints as possible in the 5 hour time limit. In total there were 15 check points, each with different points according to the difficulty and distance to get to that checkpoint. In total over 80 km of trails were marked out by the race technical team headed by Gary Choong and Wong Wye Yim. The trails encompassed a huge variety of terrain, from steep hill climbs to more gentle areas of ex-mining ponds and farms.

"Check Point 4 is a killer!" The word quickly spread amongst the racers regarding the hill climbs around Pos Dipang and Ulu Geruh. The wet conditions made the steep hill climbs even tougher, but those who chose those checkpoints were rewarded with splendid views of Gua Tempurung and the surrounding countryside. Less participants chose the flatlands around Malim Nawar area. "I hardly saw anyone else on the race course, but I was surprised to see so many water buffalo and to find that it was so scenic," said Roger Greenaway, who hails from Scotland.

One of thing's that make race organizing the best job in the world is that we get to torture people on our fiendish creations. (Hee Hee Hee, evil laugh!)  Anyway, a big thank you to all of you for your incredible spirit that gave the race its tremendous atmosphere. Although the competition was tough, you guys never stopped having fun and supporting each other. That special ingredient that makes mountain biking a great community sport comes from all of you.

Another big thank you to all the race marshals and volunteers who worked very hard on the event. We could not have run a safe and successful race without the extra effort that all of you put in. Also I could not ask for a better technical crew, operations and administration staff at Nomad Adventure. You guys are an awesome team.

Lastly the event would not have gone ahead if it were not for our Sponsors and Partners, who contributed not only prizes, but also your hardwork and passion to develop a vibrant outdoor community here in Malaysia. A heartfelt thank you to all of you who made the event such a tremendous success. It has been a pleasure to work with such true professionals who have been wonderfully generous. Our crazy idea of Gopeng Peanut Search would never have seen light of day if it were not for your wholehearted support.

Below are our race winners.
